Parent Involvement Policy
At Thurgood Marshall Middle School, parents are PARTNERS. It is our belief that parents play an important role in a child’s education. Therefore, we strive to incorporate family and community into everyday school life to enhance SUCCESS! We encourage parents to become an active part in their child’s education. One way of doing this is through the Parent Involvement Policy and the Parent-School Compact. The Parent Involvement Policy encourages active participation by all parent-school stakeholders. The Parent-School Compact shows how parents, students, and staff share the responsibility for improved student achievement and how we can help children meet the standards required by the district and the state.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS:
- Personal contact made with parents by teachers prior to the beginning of the year welcomes students and parents to Thurgood Marshall Middle.
- TMMS School Compact was developed with parents, students, and all staff members to ensure everyone shares responsibility for improved student achievement.
- Monthly calendars and newsletters are used to relay current and upcoming events and provide tips for helping children with the curriculum.
- School website (and teacher websites) is updated with current events and activities.
- Parents will receive written notice of meetings in the school newsletter and individual parent invitations with a follow-up phone call from the school call out system in regards to all Title I programs.
- Report cards are sent home every nine weeks to provide parents with information on grades and student behavior.
- Gradespeed is available on a daily basis to provide parents with information on grades at https://gradespeed.mnps.org
- Parents will receive a copy of the District Standards and curriculum on a yearly basis.
- Parents will be provided assistance with academic standards and student achievement standards during Parent Teacher Conferences and parent meetings. Parents will also be invited to discuss their child’s progress and work with teachers to improve their child’s progress during individual scheduled meetings upon teacher and parent requests.
- TMMS will provide all parents the opportunity to meet on a regularly scheduled basis to discuss and provide suggestions relating to their child’s education with a follow-up response as soon as practicably possible.
- Guidance counselors will provide parents with a copy their child’s assessment scores upon receipt.
- Parents will receive a copy of ThinkLink assessment scores from teachers after each assessment.
- Annual meeting (Open House) will be held to inform parents of Thurgood Marshall Middle Schools’ participation of Title I program to explain the requirements of the program and their right to be involved.
- Parents meetings including parent teacher conferences will be held at different times during the day to ensure all parents can attend and participate in meetings.
- Parents are encouraged to schedule time to volunteer in the classroom for school activities.
- Parent surveys are used to solicit suggestions on improving the school.
- Parents are contacted by phone regarding the positive/negative actions of their children.
- Parents are contacted by phone regarding upcoming school events.
- Parents are contacted by phone to relay school closings and other important notices.
- Parents of ELL children are contacted in their native language whenever possible.
- The school works with community groups and organizations, businesses, and pencil partners to improve student achievement and foster parent involvement.
- Parents receive a weekly discipline card to inform them of their child’s behavior at school.
- Parents are involved in the planning, review and improvement of the school’s Parent Involvement Policy.
- Title I funds may be used to pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with parent involvement activities, including transportation, childcare, and home visit expenses to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.
- Parents will vote for PTSCO committee members no later than the October of each year to ensure parents are represented at PAC cluster meetings.
- Parents will vote for committee members to form a Title I Committee. Title I Committee members will be responsible for planning, reviewing, and improving the school’s Title I program on a regular basis.
- Parents will be encouraged during monthly parent meetings to participate and assist with the development and revision of the School Improvement Plan.
- TMMS provides necessary materials and training to assist parents with working with their child to improve achievement in literacy and technology to foster parent involvement.
- TMMS follows all guidelines to ensure successful student transition from elementary to middle and middle to high school on a regular basis. Students and parents are encouraged to join their elementary children when visiting TMMS to ensure they understand the upcoming curriculum and standards and upcoming changes their child will experience. Parents are also encouraged to meet with high school guidance counselors when students complete their schedule to discuss the transition from middle school to high school based on their child’s needs.
Thurgood Marshall Middle School School Compact
The Thurgood Marshall Middle School staff, parents, and students will work as partners to foster a positive learning environment. This compact has been developed and describes school and family responsibilities. Our signatures indicate agreement to fulfill this compact to the best of our abilities.
As a staff, we pledge to:
- Have an open door policy accessible to staff at all times.
- Have an open door policy for parents to observe, participate, and volunteer in the classroom at any time.
- Teach using Highly Qualified Curriculum and Instruction.
- Provide instruction for each student at his/her own pace.
- Provide a safe school environment that promotes learning.
- Show respect with words and actions for each child and his/her family.
- Provide appropriate homework to reinforce the skills that have been taught at school.
- Communicate with parents regularly about their child’s progress.
- Provide parents will frequent progress reports in a timely manner.
- Schedule an annual parent-teacher conference to discuss academic and behavioral progress as it relates to the child’s achievement during the meeting; schedule other parent-teacher conferences as needed.
- Come to school on time prepared to teach the approval state and local curriculum.
